Analysis of inspection outcomes across the sector shows 22% of providers ‘require improvement’. While good and better grades are an improving trend, we can see patterns emerging. Career advice and guidance are common areas for improvement. However, staff skills and CPD are also frequently commented on. Selecting the right staff, developing their skills and maintaining professional development is part of the long-term strategy. Building or strengthening a robust appraisal procedure for effective performance management is critical.
Developing and improving an observation process focusing on pedagogy that links to high-quality delivery will impact retention rates, learners’ progression and increased achievement rates. Are your observers sufficiently confident in observing the practical application of pedagogy and offering appropriate developmental support?
Does your governance and leadership support long-term strategies for improvement rather than being driven by the threat of Ofsted?
