Emerging Inspection Themes
Recently, we have seen an increase in negative report comments about the impact of governance and governance access to performance information. This extract is from a recently published report and fairly accurately sums up the issue that inspectors are identifying.
“Leaders’ and governors’ understanding of the areas they need to improve, particularly in relation to the quality of the apprenticeships they offer, is underdeveloped. Governors support and challenge leaders effectively to ensure they meet their statutory responsibilities. They bring about positive change in areas, such as reviewing the effectiveness of the workforce and ensuring appropriate recruitment of teachers. However, leaders do not fully inform governors of the outcomes of quality assurance processes so that governors can support them to improve the taught elements of the apprenticeships”.
This theme hasn’t bypassed FIN members, as many are preparing more detailed data reports for their boards, and more members are seeking board membership to challenge more robustly. The board’s role is not to tell the provider what to do but to challenge actions to ensure they will have the desired impact on learner performance. On a more positive note, we read “Leaders and managers have a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of their provision”. How well does your board understand safeguarding, provision, management data, and how robustly do they scrutinise activity?
