DfE in the driving seat

Sue Pittock OBE, CEO of Remit Training, FIN member since 2017, invited Peter Mucklow to visit their automotive academies in Derby. Peter spent the morning touring the two academies and the EPA centre on the 21st of March. During the visit, Peter was able to see that Remit have continued to invest in their state-of-the-art training facilities, which are fitted out with the latest in manufacturer tooling and diagnostic equipment, ensuring  apprentices always work with the latest technology and learn the latest techniques. He also had the opportunity to meet learners and see Apprentices getting hands on experience in the workshops, on rigs and trucks with further learning and knowledge development of theory, being taught in the bespoke classrooms.

Peter then spent time with Sue Pittock OBE and the senior management team discussing some of the key challenges facing the sector including, funding bands, functional skills, IfATE costing models and other topics. Sue Pittock OBE spoke passionately on behalf of the sector, she was able to present the challenges facing the sector, provide solutions and costings to many of these challenges.   The Remit team felt Peter was in listening mode and wanted to take the time to explore better ways of moving forward for the sector.   

“Remit had the privilege of hosting Peter Mucklow from DfE.  Peter spent some quality time in Remit’s Automotive Training Academies.  Peter commented how engaged the apprentices were in their practical tasks in the workshop. He loved the bright, airy classrooms that create a great learning environment.  Peter spent several hours with the Remit team, really taking the time to understand what is working well and what the current challenges are and really listened.  Remit felt Peter’s visit was very useful for both parties and it was lovely to see Peter behind the wheel of one of our HGV trucks.”

During the tour, Remit Training were also able to share some recent successes with Peter, including; Two automotive apprentices winning Gold and Bronze at World Skills, Apprentice of the year at IMI awards, Investors in People Gold and of course Sue Pittock receiving OBE for her significant contribution to Education.

Remit were able to demonstrate to Peter their commitment to supporting and addressing the skills shortage within the Heavy Vehicle sector, delivering the largest proportion of apprenticeship starts in this sector. Peter heard about working with key clients including Scania, MAN trucks, Volvo, Iveco and Renault to name a few.

In addition to being active FIN members, Remit training also engage with us for external governance, advising the board. It is a privilege to work with organisations who are fully committed to continuously improve their provision. Learners are at the heart of Remit training’s provision investing in resources that directly impact on the learners’ experience.
